HALLÉ OPUS ONE SERIES
With Katie van Kooten - soprano; Elgar Introduction and Allegro for Strings; R. Strauss Four Last Songs; Sibelius Nightride and Sunrise; Sibelius Symphony No.5 and Elgar's richly sonorous Introduction and Allegro for Strings. This piece is scored for string quartet and string orchestra and it shows off the Hallé string-players' unfailing virtuosity. The American soprano Katie van Kooten performs Richard Strauss's sumptuous swansong, the soaring melodies of his Four Last Songs suffused with calm acceptance in the face of approaching death. The music of Sibelius progresses from luminous beauty and wistfulness, to the triumphant majesty of the rousing finale of his glorious Fifth Symphony. Conducted by Edward Gardner.
